The Kerr Community Center & The City of Bastrop presents Desert Dance Theatre’s production of “Sister Moses: The Story of Harriet Tubman” in celebration of Black History Month. Four performances will occur at the Jerry Fay Wilhelm Center for the Performing Arts, 1401 Cedar Street Bastrop, TX 78602.
Friday, February 6, "Sister Moses" will be performed for the Bastrop Independent School District and Bastrop County schools in other rural areas. These student shows are at 10:30am and 1:30pm. Make reservations and payment online in advance to secure your seats.
Two public performances on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 2:00pm and 7:30pm will include an opening program of local community performers. A selection from Desert Dance Theatre’s repertory features a tribute to Billie Holiday's “Strange Fruit" choreographed by Artistic Director, Lisa R. Chow and performed by Associate Artistic Director and Austin resident, Renee Davis. Performances by local talent includes: the Bastrop Community Singers featuring selections and arrangements, directed by Deborah Malone Sargeant, poetry by Eloise Greenfield recited by Cynee' McIntyre, and a selection from Ballet East Dance Theatre, "Freedom Calling" a solo dance choreographed by Juan Pablo Flores performed by Candis Harris. “Freedom Calling” was created in 2024 for Texas debut of the “Harriet Tubman: Journey to Freedom” traveling sculpture exhibition in Bastrop. After intermission, Desert Dance Theatre will presents its featured performance of “Sister Moses: The Story of Harriet Tubman.”
“Sister Moses: The Story of Harriet Tubman” is an inspirational story that highlights the incredible accomplishments of the anti-slavery activist, Harriet Tubman and her work on the Underground Railroad. This production tells the beautiful story of a courageous woman’s determination to free her people from slavery during a significant era in American History depicted through music, dance and drama. Harriet was one of America’s first liberated woman of color, who fought against all odds for the sake of freedom and equality.
