For the first time since the pandemic, Desert Dance Theatre will present the Arizona Dance Festival 2021, live and in-person at Tempe Center for the Arts (TCA) on October 22-23, 2021. The festival performances will begin outdoor at the TCA East Breezeway starting at 6:30pm, and will proceed into the Studio Stage for the rest of the show.
The Arizona Dance Festival will feature 28 different dance artists, companies and dance film makers, showcasing an eclectic variety of choreography and dance performances from around the state of Arizona (Phoenix, Tucson, Prescott, Flagstaff, etc.) and out of state. This unique setting will give audiences a taste of what is happening in Arizona's dance scene. It is a perfect platform for dance companies to get exposure, promote their work, and to connect with others in the dance community. Each evening performance will showcase different dance artists including emerging artists as well as professional companies from all genres and styles of dance.
The Arizona Dance Festival will also pay tribute to one of Desert Dance Theatre’s founding members, Deborah Pualani Blackmon, who lost her battle with cancer last year during the pandemic. A special solo dance, “LUX AETERNA,” choreographed by former DDT member, Diane McNeal Hunt / ELEVATE DanceWorks, will be performed by DDT founding member, Margie Romero Wolf. Diane McNeal Hunt comments about the piece, “Her passing moved me to create this work as an artistic blessing for all who have transitioned from our realm. The love is eternal.”
A post-performance “Talk Back” will be facilitated by the Arizona Dance Coalition directly after the show. The “Talk Back” will allow the audience to engage in lively conversation with the artistic directors and choreographers for insights in the creation of their dance works.
